Campeche a Colonial and Archeological Destination
Campeche is a Natural Paradise that plaid a very important role in World History. It is located on the Western Portion of the Yucatan Peninsula which closes the circle of the Gulf of Mexico, opposite to the Florida Peninsula. The City of Campeche was another Head Quarter of the Spanish Conquerors that established their reign over the big Mayan Civilization settled all along the Peninsula and way down it to Central America.
The First Spaniard soldiers got to Campeche in the year 1517 and although were defeated on the first intent, stayed anyway and took over this Mayan Provincial Capital, proceeding with its colonization. In the Mid 16th Century, Campeche had become an important port with an already established wall around the City in order to prevent a further defeat. Later it prevented attacks from Pirates that would move in from the Caribbean.
The City Central Plaza was immediately provided with a church in the place where beautiful Cathedral of “La Conception” stands today. The preserved Colonial District is of great value and was named one of “The Treasures of Mankind” by the UNESCO.
Campeche is one of the richest Archeological areas in the World due to the many outstanding discovered sacred sites, which at the time showed large population concentrations. Findings go back 2300 years since the Mayans were supposedly settled in the Campeche Area. As you move towards the south of this State you enter the Rain Forest with splendorous trees and the thick foliage of the jungle with astonishing species inhabiting in complete ecological balance.
