Outstanding historic and archeological attractions
Mayan culture reigned on the Yucatan Peninsula, on the southeastern side of Mexico, enclosed by the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea on the Atlantic side of the Country. Nonetheless Mayan civilization covered a vast extension, from Mexico’s southern Pacific coast, way in to Central America, in the countries of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador end Nicaragua. Chichen Itza is one of the most developed sacred cities of the Mayan Empire and one of the most urbanized sites of the classical Maya period. It is only 2 and a half hours drive from Cancun. A Post classical period representative is Tulum, a very complete archeological site, only 140 km down the coast, on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Also accessible to Cancun Mayan sites are Coba, El Rey and El Meco; close to Mayan sites and a further away are Uxmal and the PUUC sites Labna, Kabah, and Sayil.
