Claude can't make images, so the realistic options are to connect an image generator to Claude or to open a separate app. Melius plugs into Claude as a connector and runs dozens of image models on a canvas, Canva's connector creates designs from inside a Claude chat, and Ideogram is built for images with legible type and has its own MCP connector. Outside Claude, Adobe Firefly is part of Creative Cloud, Midjourney has its own house look, and the Gemini app generates with Google's Nano Banana models.
Anthropic's help center says "Claude doesn't generate photos or illustrations the way image-generation tools do." What Claude can draw are diagrams, charts, and interactive visuals built from HTML and SVG. Claude Design, which launched in April 2026, builds prototypes, slides, one-pagers, and social assets from your prompts and the images and documents you upload.
We ranked the options on whether you can stay in Claude, how many image models you get, what you can do with an image after generating it, and whether there's a free way to start.
Melius, the AI-native operating system for creatives, puts leading image, video, and audio models inside your Claude chat. Connect it over MCP and Claude builds a Melius canvas for you, a node-based workspace where each step of the job runs on the model that's strongest at it.
One request can chain different models together. Nano Banana Pro renders packaging copy you can actually read and keeps a reference look consistent, Flux 3 Image holds a precise layout, and GPT Image 2.5 handles generation and quick edits. The finished still can then become a video on the same canvas, and Claude shows an inline preview of the canvas in the chat. Inside the Melius app, the agent Mel builds canvases the same way.
What it does well: Claude writes prompts from your chat's context, and each image lands on a canvas for inpainting, upscaling, or video.
Trade-off: You'll need a paid Melius plan for regular generation.
Best for: Claude users who want images, edits, and video in one conversation.
Canva's AI Connector links Canva to Claude, so Claude can create and edit Canva designs, fill in Brand Templates, and export files. It suits work that starts from a layout, such as a social post, a flyer, or a slide.
What it does well: The result is a Canva design, so you can keep editing the layout in Canva afterward.
Trade-off: The connector works on Canva Free, but Brand Templates need a paid plan such as Pro, Teams, or Business, and Autofill isn't on Free or Pro Lite.
Best for: Teams who already design in Canva and want to start from Claude.
Ideogram's 4.0 and 4.5 models are pitched on clear type and reliable editing, and Ideogram 4.5 adds precise multi-turn edits at native 2K. It's available in the Ideogram app, through its API, and as an MCP connector you can add to Claude.
What it does well: Posters, packaging mockups, and thumbnails where the words have to be spelled right.
Trade-off: You get Ideogram's models only, so you'll need another tool to compare other model families on the same prompt. Ideogram 4.5 is available on Melius, next to other model families.
Best for: Designers who need lettering in the image itself.
Adobe Firefly can't generate in Claude, but it's a popular alternative with Adobe's Firefly Image Model 5, trained on licensed and public-domain content, and also offers partner models from Google, OpenAI, and others in the same app. Firefly is built into Photoshop and the rest of Creative Cloud.
What it does well: Images that move straight into Photoshop for retouching and layout.
Trade-off: Partner models carry their own terms, so Adobe's commercial-safety position covers its own models only. It also lives in a separate app.
Best for: Creative Cloud users who need a clear licensing story.
Midjourney also can't generate natively in Claude, but its V8.2 model, the default since July 2026, generates images in the Midjourney web app and on Discord, with a recognizable painterly and cinematic look. There's no free trial on the web or Discord.
What it does well: Mood boards, concept art, and editorial images where the look is the point.
Trade-off: Every image carries Midjourney's own style, and it lives in a separate app.
Best for: Artists and art directors exploring a visual direction.
The Gemini app generates and edits images with Google's Nano Banana models. Nano Banana 2 is free, and a Google AI plan unlocks Nano Banana 2.1, higher limits, and the option to redo an image with Nano Banana Pro.
What it does well: Quick edits to a photo you upload, described in plain language.
Trade-off: It's a chat app of its own, so you switch away from Claude to use it.
Best for: Free, everyday image generation and photo edits.
In Claude.ai, open Customize, then Connectors, add a custom connector named Melius with the URL https://mcp.melius.com/mcp, and sign in with your Melius account when Claude asks. Claude Desktop and Claude Code use the same connector, and there's no API key to create.
From then on, ask in plain language:
"Using Melius, generate four product shots of the bottle on this page against a sand-colored backdrop, 4:5, and show me the canvas."
Claude builds the canvas, runs the image models, and shows the result inline. The full setup is in our MCP docs, and our guide to connecting AI agents to a canvas over MCP covers what an agent can do once it's connected.
To pick between image models once they're in reach, see our roundup of the best AI image generators for creators and our breakdown of which Nano Banana model to use.
Already working in Claude? Add the Melius connector, then ask Claude for your first image.
